Welcome to the

Central/North/Hudson Valley Site

for the

Professional Development of Educational Interpreters

Part of the New York State (NYS) Preparation of Educational Interpreters Project

WELCOME! to our statewide project for the Preparation of Educational Interpreters. For interpreters new to our area or our state, the New York State Education Department is currently developing a certification test for educational interpreters working in Pre-K through 12 educational settings with students who are D/deaf, hard of hearing, and Deafblind. In the near future all interpreters wishing to be employed, or remain employed, in educational sites in New York will need to become certified. The goal of the certification process is to ensure quality interpreter services are provided statewide to students Pre-K-12. All interpreters hired by schools will have to meet the state's standards so students have equal access to the academic curriculum and other activities during school programming through qualified interpreters. It will also have positive ramifications for interpreters, giving them the legitimacy and professional stature they deserve as important members of a childís educational team.

The project is administered in four regions. Our Central/North/Hudson Valley region covers counties north to the Canadian border, south to Westchester, east to the Vermont and Massachusetts border and west to Broome, Chenango, Madison, Oneida and Lewis counties. We currently have over 300 interpreters registered within our regional site. If you have not registered with us, you may do so by contacting me by phone, regular mail or e-mail. After registering, please ask for information on when and where the knowledge assessment (EIKA) and performance assessment (EIPA) will be offered  near you. These assessments are not intended as "tests" but rather will provide feedback to you about your strengths as an interpreter as well as areas and skills you may want to develop further.

Our project is currently providing FREE training workshops in all competency areas assessed by the EIKA and EIPA throughout the state in different locations. We encourage you to check our website for lists of training workshops and locations near you. A schedule of training offerings is posted on the website approximately every two months.  Only interpreters who have registered with us and taken the assessments can attend the workshops.  Remember, our goal is to register and assess every educational interpreter in New York and to prepare them for becoming certified in New York State in the near future. If you know of interpreters who are unaware of our project, please spread the word about this wonderful opportunity and tell them to contact us.

Who am I? Let me introduce myself.
