Educational Interpreting Program (EIP)



This program provides academic preparation in linguistic, cultural and educational fields in order to prepare students to become educational interpreters in the New York state public school system.  The program, as approved in January 2001 by the State University of New York Board of Trustees, is in response to the shortage of educational interpreters across the state. Trained and qualified interpreters are needed to provide interpreting services to deaf and hard-of-hearing students attending New York state public schools.

Corning Community College, situated on top of Spencer Hill surrounded by a spectacular view of the surrounding hill sides, offers an Associate in Applied Science degree in Educational Interpreting. This degree will prepare graduates for the eventual certification that will be required of all educational interpreters in New York state public schools.

In addition to the 30 credit hours of General Education course requirements, the EIP (designated as Program #61) offers a required ten course, 36 credit hour component, that includes the following:

SIGN 1020:  American Sign Language II (4)
SIGN 2010:  American Sign Language III (4)
SIGN 2060:  American Deaf Culture (3)
EDIT 1003:  Introduction to Interpreting (3)
EDIT 1040:  Practical / Ethical Applications of Interp. (3)
EDIT 1500:  Educational Interpreting (3)
EDIT 2030:  ASL / English Interpreting (4)
EDIT 2070:  Transliteration (4)
EDIT 2960:  Interpreting Practicum & Seminar (4)
 
These courses are taught by qualified hearing and Deaf teachers, that include certified interpreters.  Every effort is made to ensure that each EI student receives individualized attention and instruction so that upon graduation from CCC they will be fully prepared to work with deaf and hard-of-hearing students in an educational setting.  Each student will be given opportunities to experience many facets of the Deaf community to enhance their understanding of:
  • American Deaf culture
  • Different models of interpreting
  • Ethics and decision making
  • Politics of the Deaf community
