INTERPRETING: A CAREER IN HIGH DEMAND
New York faces a critical shortage of interpreters to provide services
to the D/deaf and hard-of-hearing population. Nowhere is this more
significant
than in educational settings. The New York State Education Department
has
developed a set of required credentials for educational interpreters
and
has selected the City University of New York (CUNY) as one of two
institutions,
state-wide, to prepare new interpreters to satisfy these requirements.
WHAT INTERPRETING MEANS TODAY
Interpreting is a science and an art. Because language and culture
are inextricably intertwined, interpreters must possess:
-
a strong language base in both American Sign Language (ASL) and English
and the way they are used within their respective communities, and
-
the ability to extract meaning from a message expressed in one language
and convey an equivalent meaning in another language.
To interpret in educational settings, providing a bridge between
D/deaf/hard-of-hearing
students and their hearing peers, instructors and school
administrators,
interpreters must also have an understanding of:
-
child development & language acquisition,
-
regulations regarding the education of D/deaf and hard-of-hearing
children,
-
educational methodologies and the educational system.
Laguardia Community College's
Interpreting Education Program website contains information for
interpreters
and future interpreters wishing to earn a 2+2 Bachelor's in Educational
Interpreting, or a Certificate of Completion (2 year program).
