Description
Role
of the Interpreters
1. Facilitate communication by following the
guidelines of the student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP) between the
administration, teachers and student in an educational setting.
2. Train the student how to utilize an
interpreter in an educational setting and advocate for their rights.
3. Inform the school staff about the role of
an interpreter.
4. Provide informational about Deaf culture,
resources and technology.
Responsibilities
1. Provide sign to voice and voice to sign
interpreting, or visible to spoken and spoken to visible interpreting and voice
(may include American Sign Language, a form of manually coded English, and/or
oral interpreting) for Deaf and hard of hearing students in mainstream classes.
2. Participate in meetings with other members
of the educational team dealing with the development and review of the
Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and it related to interpreting.
3. Provide interpreting for situations that
are part of the educational program that occur outside of the school
environment.
4. Provide interpreting for extracurricular
activities and parent meetings as necessary.
5. Provide orientation to deafness and
interpreting to hearing students and staff.
6. Provide and accessible learning environment
for the deaf student.
7. Prepare for the classroom interpretation by
learning the new terminology, technical signs and lesson goals.
8. Maintain confidentiality in regard to
interpreting situations.
9. Provide interpreting services for testing
as stated in the student's IEP and regulated by the State Education Department.
10. Strive for further knowledge and skills
through participation in workshops, professional meetings, interaction with
professional colleagues and reading of current literature in the field.
