Biography of Pattina Keniston,
Coordinator of the CNHV Site for the
Professional Development of Educational Interpreters

Since 1992, Pattina has been fully immersed in the Deaf Community. This daily contact with members of the Deaf Community, of various ages, backgrounds, and communication modes, has been the motivating force in gaining expertise in studies of ASL, Deaf Culture, and Bi-Lingual Education.

 

She was awarded National Certification from RID (CI), a BA.ed in TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) and is currently pursuing her Masters in Second Language Acquisition.



Pattina is also an active member of:

 

As a non-Native speaker of English, Pattina has approached language learning, interpreting, teaching and interpreter training with a Bi-Lingual/Bi-Cultural mindset.

 

Since 1998, she has had the privilege of teaching ASL in community/ adult education programs, as well as the college/ university level. In 2002, Pattina became a Certified Staff Interpreter at the Resource Center for Independen Living (RCIL), in Utica, New York. In 2004, RCIL was awarded the New York State Educational Interpreters Training Program for the Central Northern Hudson Valley Region (CNHV), upon which Pattina was appointed as the Site Coordinator for the CNHV region. In addition to the duties to Educational Interpreters Training Project, a grant was awarded to act as Coordinator in the development for the AAS Degree Program for Educational Interpreters, in conjunction with Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC), in Utica, NY. This program is slated to run in the fall of 2006.
