Part of the New York State (NYS) Preparation of Educational Interpreters Project

The New York State Education Department Board of Regents has mandated the establishment of standards and a credential for educational interpreters for D/deaf, hard-of-hearing, and Deafblind students to ensure that interpreter services are provided by qualified individuals.  New York State educational interpreter certification will be necessary within the next three to four years in order to obtain and/or maintain employment within the field of pre-K-12th grade interpreting.

The Western Regional Site for the Professional Development of Educational Interpreters has been in the process of identifying those interpreters who work in pre-K-12 settings with students who are D/deaf, hard-of-hearing, or Deafblind.  To date, we have registered 350 interpreters within the 24 counties of the Western Region.  These interpreters have been able to benefit from assessment and training funded by the NY State Education Department at no cost to the interpreter in order to prepare for New York State educational interpreter Permanent Certification.  A total of 43 workshops have been developed to train those interpreters who have been assessed through the Educational Interpreter Knowledge Assessment (EIKA) and the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).  We strive to present quality educational opportunities to better prepare every educational interpreter to achieve those standards necessary to be a qualified Pre-K-12th grade interpreter for the state of New York.

Our goal and commitment is to better prepare every Pre-K-12th grade educational interpreter to become certified in the near future.  This will afford them the formal recognition of the overdue prestige and respect that is due in the field of educational interpreting.  We have enjoyed meeting and working with you to achieve this goal.  It is our honor and privilege to represent you as coordinators of the Western Regional Site for the Professional Development for Educational Interpreters.  If you have questions, comments, or suggestions, please contact us at the following address:
