Non-Manual Signals in ASL

This workshop will focus on developing accurate non-manual signals as used in ASL. Demonstrations of each category of facial behaviors will be shown in context. Participants will have a chance to incorporate what they have learned through practice exercises.  Participants will be able to define non-manual signals; learn what non-manual signals are used for in ASL; list and define the 6 functions of non-manual signals; discuss, identify and practice sentence types, and mouth movements in ASL; list and define listenerís feedback, and socio-political factors which influence usage; and discuss how ASL non-manual signals can be incorporated into work.

  • Use of Signing Space: Use of Verb/Directionality/Pronominal System
  • Use of Signing Space: Location/Relationship Using ASL Classifier System
  • Signs: Signs Made Correctly
  • Signs: Fluency (rhythm & rate)
  • Message Processing: Appropriate Eye (gaze) Contact Movement
