Developer: Michael Canale, MA, CI & CT

Often lack of target knowledge is thought to be the problem for interpreters
when, in fact, some processing skills are lacking. Interpretation
requires a duplicate knowledge of all languages one works in. This
workshop will discuss and practice one primary component of the interpreting
process - discourse. Participants will closely examine the discourse
used in spoken and written English and American Sign Language. Through
discussion and simple texts participants will examine how discourse is
used, what discourse markers are, and how information about discourse and
discourse markers can help with prediction skills.
