Biography of Sallie M. Bruno, IC/TC
Coordinator of the Long Island Regional Site for the Professional Development of Educational Interpreters

Sallie BrunoHello Edterps,

Many of you have known me for a long time and are part of my bio. You've taught me, shared with me, allowed me to teach you, and become my professional peers and friends. However, for those of you who are learning about me….read on.

I've been an Educational Interpreter for almost twenty years. In my current district, I am senior interpreter and on the Negotiations Team. I've worked (interpreted) in every grade from K-12, some more than once. The children for whom I have been privileged to interpret have used many different types of communications.

Suffolk County Community College has an Interpreting Degree Program where I have been an adjunct instructor for 15 years. While there I taught all ASL levels, Fingerspelling, Introduction to Interpreting, Voice to Sign Interpreting, and Sign to Voice Interpreting. I've been involved with the Advisory Board, Program Review and Development Committees, as well as the Interview Committee.

Initially, I learned to sign from a Deaf family, and I thank them for teaching me ASL and Deaf Culture, introducing me to the Deaf Community and being my friends. There were no ITPs when I learned to interpret; I came along under the old RID mentor system. So I relied heavily on my mentors and feedback from Deaf consumers. Thanks, Ron and Maureen.

My first interpreting job for a school district brought me in contact with a wonderful teacher of the deaf who showed me the ropes to work in an educational setting. The students were diverse and offered a rare opportunity to switch codes, modes, languages, gears! Thanks, Julie.

In the past, I've served as Region I Delegate for the EdITOR SIG and held various offices in the local RID chapter. Currently I am on the Professional Development Committee with Millneck Services for the Deaf.

As the Long Island Regional Site Coordinator, I look forward to renewing old acquaintances, meeting new members of the profession, and to us all working together toward improving educational interpreting in New York.

Please feel free to e-mail me with any question you may have.
