A Brief Internet Treasure Hunt In Deaf Education

Directions: Follow the directions and you should get to all the sites.

1) Using your search engine (Yahoo, Netscape, etc), type in "education + deafness". Look at the listing and write 2 of the sites that came up.

2) Locate "Deaf Education Option Web". Click on the following areas and briefly look at them. After examining each area, please answer these questions:

A) "Early Intervention" ? Why is this important and what does it involve?

B) "Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP)" ? Is it mandated by the state or federal government? Up to what age? Who is involved in its creation?

C) "Accommodations" ? What are some accommodations that might be put into a studentís IEP? (list 4)

3) Go to "DEAFED.NET". Look around the web site.
A) Click on "Council on the Education of the Deaf", What is the purpose of this site?

B) Look at "Special features" and click on "Parent/Infant, Preschool, K-12 & College Instructional Strategies, Act. & Curr". Follow the prompts and fill in the areas you are interested in or working in. What areas did you see?

4) Now go to http://www.cfv.org. Answer the following:

A) What is cfv?_____________________________________________________

B) Why is it important for a teacher with deaf students(s) to know about and use this site?

5) Go to "Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center". How is this site helpful?

6) Go to "Hearingexchange.com". Click on the message board. What forums do you think would be beneficial?

7) Before going to #8, stop and think about what you have just viewed. Is your impression that most sites seem to promote speech development or look at the whole development of the child who is deaf? Review the sites more carefully if necessary.

8) Finally, go to "A to Z Teachers Stuff". Look around this site. What is the special feature of this month? Search the site for a lesson plan on polar bears. Look at the plans. Why would these hands-on lessons as well as this site be beneficial for classroom teachers?
