E. And Smith, L., Silver Spring, Maryland: T.J. Publishers, Inc.
(1983)
Being both Black and Deaf is in many ways a "double whammy" because
of societyís abrogation of each of these two minorities. When the
conditions of Blackness and deafness are combined in one person, the individual
effects of prejudice, discrimination, and negative self-image are compounded
exponentially. Both authors are Black and Deaf themselves and know
intimately of the experiences and needs of which they write.

explain how Deaf culture works, what it means to its members, how they
define themselves within it, and how they interact with the world outside.

in teacher preparation to create the leadership needed as the community
strives to best serve Deaf children.

Sounds Like Home, Growing Up Black and Deaf in the South.
Wright, M. H., Washington, D.C: Gallaudet University Press. (1999)
I began losing my hearing when I was about eight and a
half years old. By the age of ten, I was completely deaf. I
decided to write my story because I wanted my children to have a lasting
document that chronicled my experiences growing up as a deaf person in
Iron Mine, N.C.. I also decided to write my story for my many deaf friends
because my story, in many ways, is also their story. There are many
stereotypes that persist about deaf people. This book covers the period
of time from the mid-1920s to the early 1940s, when I had to make the transition
from a hearing world to one of total silence.
